Angie (Barrett) HERBERT Of Kent, lost her courageous struggle against brain cancer on June 19. She was 33. Born on May 27, 1972, she spent her childhood in Anchorage, Alaska and Kent, Washington. She was the 1990 Kent-Meridian National Merit Scholar, a Phi Beta Kappa and a 1994 graduate (in English) of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. She spent her junior year in Scotland at the University of Aberdeen. She was passionate about literature, books, and words. In the winter of 1995, she traveled to Elblag, Poland as a teacher, where she met and fell in love with her beloved husband Shawn. Married in 1996, Angie and Shawn started a wonderful family which grew to include Sophie (1997), Grace (1999), and Daniel and Peter (2002). Being their mother was her calling and her greatest accomplishment. In January of 2003, when her twins were eight months old, she was diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma, a rare brain tumor. She was sustained and nurtured by so many people, including her faith community of St. John the Baptist in Covington; her children's school, St. Philomena in Des Moines; the amazing women of the Kent-Meridian Preschool; the doctors and nurses of Valley Medical Center, including Dr. Peter Balousek, Jennifer Dahl-Buck, Dr. John Hersman, Sue Cedarholm, and Dr. John Travaglini; and her inspiring brain cancer support group. The family thanks Virginia Mason for the loving care they gave her for six weeks. She was deeply thankful to have had the chance to go on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, in the spring of 2004. She lived well and deeply, and just wished for more time. To her family and friends, she was the kindest, bravest, most extraordinary person we've ever met, and she will be deeply missed. In addition to her husband and children, she was survived by her wonderful mother, Dawn Barrett; her brothers Nick and Joe; a large and loving extended family including her grandparents and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as many beloved friends, including Kori Jones, Camille Schaefer, and Jessica McDougal. Her father, Wayne Barrett, died in 1990.
